WT.3000 Subsonic Wind Tunnel

WT.3000 is an open circuit, downstream fan type subsonic wind tunnel for educational purposes. It is a floor standing unit with its own support structure made of anodised aluminum and mounted on castors for easy movement.

Acrylic glass working section is fitted with a retracting mechanism for easy access and model/ accessory interchange. Air flow is generated with a 2.20 kW motor and axial fan producing a low noise level. The 7 blade fan impeller is a hydrofoil-design aluminum cast to ensure maximum aerodynamic efficiency and minimum turbulence. Fan speed is adjustable by means of an inverter. Air flow speed is infinitely adjustable in 0 - 30 m/s range. Polycarbonate honeycomb flow straightener with L:D = 10:1 is mounted in the air intake. Intake contraction ratio is 1:10. The contraction and diffusion sections have a high quality internal finish. Accessories for all laboratory demonstrations are PC supported with STIROLAB-WT.3000 software package.

Experimental capabilities:

  • Estimation of drag coefficients of various bodies, e.g. sphere, hemisphere, disc, streamlined shape etc.
  • Estimation of drag and lift coefficients of an aerofoil
  • Pressure distribution around an aerofoil or cylinder
  • Effects of instability of a flutter wing
  • Investigation of the development of the boundary layer on a flat plate by measuring the total head distribution
  • Flow visualization studies around an aerofoil
  • Measurement of pressure distribution around an aerofoil at various angles of attack
  • Measurement of lift and drag on an aerofoil with leading edge slot and trailing edge flap
  • Velocity and pressure distribution measurement using Pitot static tube and yaw probe
  • Measurement of drag for a selection of models of different shapes but common equatorial diameter
  • Demonstration of flutter of an aerofoil
  • Calibration of the wind tunnel velocity indicator using a Pitot static tube and inclined manometer
  • Investigation of the wake behind an aerofoil or cylinder using a wake survey rake
